The greatest rock and roll band in the world
Thursday Jan 06, 2011
Thursday Jan 06, 2011
Folks,
Back to the regular format, around an hour of music, commentary and Kip's skewed viewpoint on the world in general. Today's music includes a number of selections about farms and dirt. Why? Because it's where our food comes from, that's why.
The other music section is simply because I'm sick and tired of the attention paid to the Beatles. They weren't the only game in town, and The Rolling Stones were the other game, and they're still at it. Where I came from, you were either a Beatles kid, or a Rolling Stones/Led Zep kid, and I definitely wasn't a Beatles kid.
Enjoy, click "share", email this out, and have a good week.
Outta here,

The Outlaw way
Friday Dec 31, 2010
Friday Dec 31, 2010
AS 2010 comes to a close and we open the new chapter in the book and start to write 2011, it's only fitting to do a show that pays tribute to and explores the spirit and passion of the road, of the renegades, pirates and outlaws that populate my life, and are so much the beating heart of the American spirit. Passionate, fun and all-out full throttle, pedal to the metal balls out rock and roll.
Kiss your kids, tell the ones you love out loud that you do. This rodeo, this flying circus we're in called life is a one way ticket, and no one, absolutely no one gets out alive. So climb up in the chute, suicide wrap your right hand in and go for the cowbell, go for your 8 seconds. This ain't a dress rehearsal, IT"S A CRAZY, JUICY, WONDER FILLED BANQUET CALLED LIFE!
Outta' here, see ya next year

A Christmas story
Saturday Dec 18, 2010
Saturday Dec 18, 2010
Pssst! I'll let you in on a secret, I like Christmas. After long years spent being a Scrooge or a Grinch, I like Christmas. There's been a lot of re-membering and re-discovering, and along that path, this story came. The words, the narrative, the very story itself are my own, with the music from others. I invite you now to come sit a while, allow me the pleasure of sharing this gift and listen to this Christmas tale, and along the way, maybe you'll do so re-membering and re-discovering of your own. (you'll also finally find out the secret behind the column's and broadcast's name!) I ask you to use the Share buttons found on this site, and share this tale with your friends and family through e-mail, FB, or whatever, not because it's mine, because truly it isn't, but is something to be shared.
Peace on Earth, Good Will towards Man
Merry Christmas

The Blues had a grandchild and they named it rock and roll

The true roots of rock and roll, the blues.
Robert Johnson
Elmore James
John Lee Hooker
Howlin' Wolf
Little Walter
These grandfathers of rock and roll laid the path, it's called the blues. Mix them all up with Jimi, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and throw in a liberal dose of Texas blues and you've got the foundation that rock and roll was laid on, and how that continues on into today, providing hours of just damn good music.
Consider this couple of hours your break from constant holiday music, sit back and enjoy!!

Bruce, John and Kid
Artists that if you have to use a last name, you're waaaayyyy out of the loop and probably not even living in American culture. Put this week's together as a birthday present for myself. The two albums released this week, two of the top 5 of the year; Kid's Born Free and Bruce's The Promise combined with John Mellencamp's evoking of the ghosts of Hank Williams, Elvis and Johnny Cash with the current tour behind No Better Than This, where he deconstructs his music back to it's roots, provide perfect brackets, perfect bookends around 40 years worth of any working man or woman's life. These three have managed to stay in touch with their roots, with where they were born and where they'll most likely die and stay in touch with the everyday lives of the people around them.
This old world's in quite a mess, but it's music that unites us, and the uniquely American form of it called rock and roll. Enjoy your weekend, and enjoy the day. Life is a big, messy, juicy banquet. Step up to it and dig in.

The Real Country
Friday Nov 12, 2010
Friday Nov 12, 2010
This week. . .the other parts of country that you don't hear. The hard driving rock and roll beat, the roots sound, the sound that Nashville cringes at because it refuses to be tamed, and put into something nice and palatable, mainstream with good manners and non-offensive. Not here, not this week. . . . . the real country that still is played in the outside the boundaries, outlaw tradition started so long ago by Waylon, Willie, Johnny and Kris when they turned their back on the Nashville "sound", stuck up a big middle finger and said "F*** you" and played it their way and their style and didn't care what the corporate record company execs said would sell to the most people, because to the industry, that's what it's about. . .product.
To true country artists, it's about the sounds of Memphis, Austin, Muscle Shoals, backwoods Alabama and Georgia. It's about rock and roll, country, gospel, soul, bluegrass and the stories of everyday men and women just trying to get by. . .that's country.

On the fringes
Thursday Oct 21, 2010
Thursday Oct 21, 2010
This week's smorgasbord covers everything
The music that hangs around the fringes, the stuff that you almost never hear, but should be listened to. What actually comprises the core of the Red Dirt movement, and it's Outlaw roots. The music that somehow becomes the tremendous gumbo comprised of tube amplified '70's rock and roll, outlaw rock and roll country, good songwriting, and pulls in a good blues, gospel and roots base.
Artists this week include:
Steve Earle
Reckless Kelly
The Band of Heathens
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Randy Rogers
And a host of others, along with a discussion of where it came from, and where it's headed.
