Mr. Dylan, I presume. . . .
Thursday May 19, 2011
Thursday May 19, 2011
This week, through the magic of technology, a broadcast from the far reaches. Based on the current magazine stand edition of Rolling Stone with it's list of the Top 70 Bob Dylan songs of all time. Covers of Bob, 9 of the Top 10 songs by Bob himself, and a crazy, convoluted theme to all of it, you'll just have to listen to get it. Enjoy!!!!!
Because I'm doing this remotely, please, please, please click the little green Share button below and Share this on FB and Twitter, I'm unable to from where I am.

My own kind of royalty
Friday Apr 29, 2011
Friday Apr 29, 2011
This one got put together the night before I leave to watch my youngest son graduate from college. My heart's on my sleeve with it, and I suppose that touches the playlist, for he is my royalty, one of my two princes. It also is being put together 24 hours after tornadoes ripped through Alabama and much of the South, leaving a trail of death and destruction, and there's a way to help out those who been hit by this disaster in here this week.
Steve Earle - the newly released one; I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive
Tab Benoit - New stuff
My Morning Jacket - A sneak peek at the new album
Taddy Porter - another unsigned, unknown artist out of Oklahoma who rocks
Ty Stone - a homeboy, from downriver Detroit
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - another supremely talented relatively unknown artist
Gary C. Carter, Jr., Raphael Saadiq,
The Foo Fighters - Rock is reborn, simply epic
More of the new Robbie Robertson
Stick around this week, you'll find out how to help out down South, get a little music history, and support those artists who are flying just below the radar, and you don't hear that often. Click Share on the little green button below, or share it on Facebook, the idea is to get some airtime for these guys, and break the hold that corporate labels and producers have on music.
Click Listen Now, or Play in Pop-up, or Download, and remember that you can get it on iTunes too.
Become a fan on Facebook of The Desolation Angel or Music that doesn't suck canal water, and get notified whenever a new 'cast is put out and archived here. Thanks for being a fan of music, and supporting these guys.

A tasty gumbo. . . . .
Monday Apr 11, 2011
Monday Apr 11, 2011
This week's show has new music, music you probably haven't heard, the normal mix of unclassifiable musicians, bands and artists. The setlist puts together musicians who are willing to sacrifice for authenticity and reality and aren't afraid to take chances. A tasty gumbo made up of Americana, rock and funk with it's roots deep into gospel, the hill country, deep in the Delta and masters of instruments that go beyond the traditional guitar, bass and drum to mandolin, dobro, keyboards and horns. Each one true to their muse, their artistic voice and their roots. Come along on the journey, let it be your background for 2-3 hours while you get other work done.
This week:
The new Robbie Robertson
Paul Simon's new work
Steve Earle (a sneak peek)
Warren Haynes (another sneak peek)
Trombone Shorty
Kermit Ruffins
Ha Ha Tonka
A soulful blend of New Orleans brass/rock/funk bands and a set from #givememyoutlawxxxshit bands and artists

Authentic music. . . ..
Thursday Mar 31, 2011
Thursday Mar 31, 2011
Continuing the contest and exploring new artists and unsigned ones. Exposing those folks who work away at it for the love of their craft and their music. This week, the contest continues. If you've heard at least one of these 25 artists live, and heard of a couple more of them somewhere other than this broadcast you win - a t-shirt or coffee mug, some free CD's and a 5 dollar donation is made in your name to one of 3 worthy organizations: The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, The American Red Cross or Farm Aid. Just use the e-mail feature, comments or Facebook to let me know and you can have me donating money in your name.
If there's artists on here you're interested in, get a hold of me and I'll let you know who they are and how to grab their music and get them paid and bypass the labels and distribution networks.
Enjoy, and as always, I can be found on Facebook as either Kip Williams, The Desolation Angel, or Music that doesn't suck canal water; can be found on Twitter, and this podcast can be found on iTunes and remember to use the green Share button just below this to let your friends join in and hear these fine folks.

Stump the music producer
Wednesday Mar 23, 2011
Wednesday Mar 23, 2011
There's a lot of you out there who are very, very sharp musically, and know quite a bit about it, and go way beyond the commercial product that's available. So we're going to run a contest the rest of the month where you can show your musical savvy and benefit some good causes.
Here's how it works in the broadcast for the next two weeks:
There are 25 artists in this week's broadcast with 25 songs, and there will be next week too. For both weeks, here's how it works:
For each week, in that week's show, if you have seen at least one of the artists live and can name where and when AND if you can honestly say that you heard at least two more of them somewhere other than on this show, and can name who they are before you come up on a break in the show and I name them off (be honest about this part) you'll win the chance to have me make a $5 donation in your name to your choice of one of 3 charities:
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Farm Aid
The Red Cross Relief fund for Japanese survivors of the tsunami and earthquake.
You'll also win your choice of a t-shirt or coffee mug, and the next two week's shows burned as music CD's.
No, I'm not going to list the artist in it here, like I normally do, and it's going to be tougher than it sounds
It does two things (1) donate to a worthy cause and (2) if you can do it, you're one of the people out there supporting independent artists, musicians and bands, which in today's market and modeling scheme is what they need.
All you have to do is either use this site here and it's e-mail function, or comment it out (I moderate the comments, so I won't show your name or address to the public) or use Facebook to let me know.
Enjoy, and it's not going to be easy.

Closer to the edge . . . . . . .
Thursday Mar 17, 2011
Thursday Mar 17, 2011
This week's show, artists with new releases, old friends with new tunes and forgotten ones, and the dependably warped look at the world
The Old 97's
Lucinda Williams
The Band of Heathens
R.E.M.
New work from old masters
John Lee Hooker
The New York Dolls
Garland Jeffreys
Graham Parker
Warren Zevon
And the normal gaggle of pleasant surprises.
The commentary today takes on a week's worth of what's been unfolding in the world, and my own take on it, which, somehow never seems to match anyone else's, anyone at all.
Make it a good week, settle in and spend a couple of hours with it free here, so you don't have to buy satellite radio and search for it. The broadcast is also available now in iTunes, either as single episodes or a subscription, and it's free.
Please leave a comment, or a rating, or send me an e-mail using any of the handy tools on this site to do it with, your input is what helps shape the show and it's content. Use the green "Share" button to share this with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz, MySpace and a number of other social media.
You can also become a "fan" of the broadcast on Facebook and like it there. Do a search for Desolation Angel, and you can hit the fan page for it.
Take care, have a great one, get shit done, and make it count.

That trumpet and that wall. . . .
Thursday Mar 10, 2011
Thursday Mar 10, 2011
This week's broadcast is a look at the sound of brass, and the contributions of horns to the driving sound of rock and roll.
Chicago
The Muscle Shoals Horns and Rhythm Section
Blood, Sweat and Tears
The Electric Flag
The Memphis Horns
The Grass Roots
Sly and The Family Stone
The contributions of all the other instruments are often overlooked, or minimized in favor of believing that it's only the guitar, and the drums that make up a song.
Not true, it's about passion, musical ability and the ability to channel the musical muse. Every band, every rock and roller stated out as a band kid, and truth be told, it goes all the way back. Look at Joshua and that fuckin' set of trumpets, blew a damn wall down and it all started there.
Enjoy, and get it, hit it and let it rock.
